Basic Electronics Training Begins
The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering will be offering a “Basic Electronics Course” for preparatory class and first-year students.
Planned as a 12-week program, the course aims not only to help students understand electronic circuits theoretically but also to enable them to build circuits on a breadboard, use basic laboratory equipment, take measurements, and interpret the results they obtain.
In the training sessions, each topic will first be covered through basic theoretical information and an explanation of how the circuit works, followed by a hands-on laboratory experiment related to that topic.
As part of the program:
- Use of a breadboard, multimeter, and power supply,
- Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws,
- Voltage divider and potentiometer applications,
- Use of an oscilloscope and function generator,
- RC filters and the transient behavior of capacitors,
- Diodes and rectifier circuits,
- Sensors such as LDRs and NTCs, and sensor connection methods,
- Load driving with BJT transistors,
- PWM generation and DC motor speed control using the NE555 integrated circuit without a microcontroller,
- Basic operating principles of DC, servo, and stepper motors,
- amplifier and comparator circuits using the LM741 op-amp
will be covered through hands-on applications.
During the final two weeks of the program, students will integrate the topics they have learned throughout the course to build a simple sensor-controlled electronic system.
Course Schedule
Course duration: 12 weeks
Session duration: 1.5 hours
Time: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
In the first week of the term, classes will be held only on Thursday.
In subsequent weeks, if there is a need or student demand, the sessions for that week will be held on
Monday 4:00 PM – 5:30
PM and
Thursday 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
in two separate sessions.
There will be no classes during exam weeks when the two in-term exams are administered; the program will resume where it left off following the exam weeks.
Course Structure
Each class week generally consists of:
A brief overview of the topic → Analysis of the circuit and discussion of the expected results → Setting up the experiment → Measurement → Interpretation of the results
This will be the general format followed each week.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- be able to build basic electronic circuits on a breadboard,
- use a multimeter, oscilloscope, function generator, and power supply at a basic level,
- be able to take measurements in electronic circuits and interpret the results,
- Understand the operating principles of basic electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, sensors, the NE555, and the LM741,
- be able to build a simple electronic system by combining different circuit blocks
are the objectives.
The Basic Electronics Course is open to students who wish to gain a hands-on introduction to the field of electronics and build a solid foundation for future courses in electronic circuits, analog electronics, microprocessors, and similar subjects.
