We Remember Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş with Respect and Gratitude

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our esteemed professor **Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş**, who served for many years in the Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering at Yıldız Technical University and was one of our department’s former chairs, on July 16, 2026.

After completing her education in Electronic and Communication Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş earned her Ph.D. in Communication Engineering from the University of Bradford in 1979. Having begun her academic career in the United Kingdom, she joined Yıldız Technical University in 1983; she was promoted to associate professor in 1987 and to full professor in 1993.

In addition to her academic work at Yıldız Technical University, Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş also held significant administrative responsibilities, serving as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from 1994 to 1998, and served as Chair of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering from 2004 to 2010. Throughout her tenure, she made significant contributions to our department’s education, research, and institutional development.

Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş’s scientific research focuses on spanned a broad range of topics, including electromagnetic wave theory, microwave circuits, modeling of microwave transistors and amplifiers, low-noise amplifier design, antennas, and artificial intelligence-supported RF/microwave design methods. Through her pioneering work—which integrated classical microwave engineering approaches with artificial neural networks, support vector machines, optimization algorithms, and deep learning methods—she made valuable contributions to her field.

Throughout his academic career, our professor authored numerous scientific publications and led many projects; by advising dozens of master’s and doctoral students, he made significant contributions to the development of the fields of electromagnetic fields and microwave engineering in Turkey. The body of scientific knowledge he built through the courses he taught, the research he conducted, and the students he mentored continues to live on in the work of many academics who are currently pursuing their research at various universities and research institutions.

A professor’s legacy endures not only in the courses they teach, the publications they produce, or the theses they supervise, but also in their students’ scientific outlook, work ethic, and the new generations they mentor. Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş has also left a lasting mark on our department’s institutional memory and in the lives of her students through her scientific rigor, productivity, and mentorship.

We express our gratitude to our esteemed professor for her valuable contributions to our department, our university, and the scientific community; we remember her with respect, gratitude, and prayers for her soul.

**We pray for God’s mercy upon Prof. Dr. Filiz Güneş and extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, students, colleagues, and our entire academic community.**
